Montavue and Avertx might be two brands you are familiar with since they are both US-based companies that use Dahua and Hikvision OEMs (respectively) for their surveillance products.

Comparing these two brands will be interesting because we will be weighing up a variety of devices ranging from low-end PoE bullet-type cameras to high-resolution fisheye lenses. Along with that, we will be indirectly comparing the two major Chinese OEMs.

So with that being said, let’s get into it.

Montavue vs Avertx Overview

Montavue was founded fairly recently in 2016. The company is based in Missoula, Montana, and offers everything needed for a video surveillance system whether it’s cameras, DVRs/NVRs, junction boxes, mounts, or even hard drives. They are known for their impressive customer services, which are fully US based.

However, as they utilize Dahua OEM they do not have NDAA and FCC approval.

AvertX is another US-based company that was founded in 2012. With Hikvision OEM products they also do not have NDAA or FCC approval for US federal contracts.

AvertX places a strong emphasis on DIY and intelligent software-based features (such as cloud storage and computer vision) but the amount of hardware provided by their catalog is very limited.

The mobile apps offered by both of these brands (on both the Appstore and Google Play Store) have mixed reviews with the final score averaging between 3.1 and 3.3 stars. Most of the complaints, for either of these apps, were regarding connectivity issues and overall laggy performance.

Budget PoE Bullet Head to Head

Key Differences

In our first comparison, we put the Montavue MTB8105-C against the Avertx HD438, and right out the gate, it’s apparent that the Montavue camera has the upper hand.

The Montavue MTB8105-C when set up with an original Montavue NVR, can be fully compatible with Montavue’s cross-platform application. (Which also works with internet browsers.)

On top of that, this Montavue camera supports multiple interoperability protocols such as ONVIF, CGI, and P2P

The AvertX HD438, on the other hand, only offers Android and iOS applications. Also, it doesn’t officially support other interoperability protocols.

The Montavue camera supports multiple storage options including NAS and FTP (on top of the conventional Micro SD and NVR) while the AvertX camera only supports NVR and MicroSD cards.

The Montavue camera can record audio while the AvertX cannot due to the lack of an in-built microphone.

AvertX HD438 tends to be more expensive, but if you buy multiple units the price per unit is approximately the same as a Montavue MTB8105-C. Nonetheless, you get a lot more features from the Montavue camera and there’s no denying that it offers better value.

Key Features in Common

Even though the differences between these two cameras are as clear as night and day, they happen to share a few similarities.

Both cameras are rated IP67 which is ideal for outdoor installations. They also record footage at the same 4K resolution of 3840x2160 through an 8MP camera.

Surprisingly, these cameras can operate independently as standalone devices because of the backup MicroSD card. However, if you want to control the cameras and check live footage, you will need to connect these cameras to their compatible NVRs.

Mid-Range PoE Bullet Head to Head

Key Differences

For our mid-range PoE bullet-type security camera comparison we have the Montavue MTB5098-AISMD and the AvertX HD458.

The AvertX camera records at a higher 4K resolution of 3840x2160 through an 8MP camera while the Montavue camera has a 2K-ish resolution of 2592x1944 through a 5MP camera.

However, the Montavue camera supports up to 30fps and records three separate video streams while the AvertX camera can only reach 20fps on two different video streams.

The AvertX camera can record audio while the Montavue camera cannot due to a lack of an in-built microphone.

Just like many other Montavue PoE cameras, this device supports ONVIF, CGI, and P2P protocols while the AvertX camera only supports RTSP. However, do note that these cameras need to be configured to a compatible NVR.

Both cameras support MicroSD, NVR, and FTP for storage.

Both of these cameras are IP-based PoE devices with the option to receive power through a DC adapter.

They can work independently as standalone devices (via the microSD card) but you’ll need to connect an NVR for remote viewing and control, especially if you want to take advantage of the mobile applications and the numerous interoperability functions.

The lenses on both cameras are fixed and cannot perform any PTZ functions.

Both cameras work well in low-light conditions and they include both infrared and full-color night vision technologies. Unfortunately, they do not include spotlights, so you will have to provide external ambient lighting if you want the color night vision feature to work properly.

High-End PoE Camera Head to Head

Key Differences

The flagship PoE cameras provided by Montavue and AvertX are very different in terms of the chassis, pricing, software, and many more.

Speaking of the chassis, Montavue’s flagship PoE camera is the Montavue MTB81130-V-AISMD-B with a bullet-type case while the Avertx HD848 has a dome-type chassis.

The AvertX dome-type PoE camera is pricier than the Montavue camera but it provides two-way communication.

The Montavue camera, on the other hand, does not support two-way communication but has an in-built microphone that records audio. So despite both devices having in-built microphones, they are used for very specific applications.

The Montavue camera can record at 30fps and also supports full color-night vision while the AvertX camera is limited to 20fps and infrared night vision.

Also the Montavue camera supports ONVIF protocols whereas the AvertX camera supports RTSP.

On top of that, both cameras can be managed through their respective mobile and browser-based applications, when connected to the NVR.

Both high-end devices are IP-based and can be powered through PoE along with the DC power option.

As both devices support MicroSD card slots they can operate independently without an NVR. However, you won’t be able to pull in a real-time feed through the mobile application.

These cameras record footage through an 8MP camera at a 4K resolution of 3840x2160. Both devices use motorized lenses and have 4x optical zoom magnification features. Unfortunately, these cameras do not support motorized panning and tilting.

Both cameras are ready for the outdoors, thanks to their IP67 rating and they offer human and vehicle detection features.

Fisheye Head to Head

Key Differences

In our final comparison, we have the Montavue MTF5360X and AvertX HD119 fish-eye panoramic security cameras.

Here, the AvertX fish-eye camera is very expensive compared to its Montavue counterpart.

However, this added cost is reasonable because it has a plethora of intelligent features that include human/vehicle detection, people counting, and heat mapping. It is also IP67 rated, making it ideal for the outdoors as well.

The Montavue camera can only detect humans/vehicles and it is not weather-proof so only suitable for indoor installations.

The AvertX camera is designed to cover a wider area with more detail thanks to the 9MP camera that outputs frames on a 3000x3000 maximum resolution and records video at 20 frames per second.

The Montavue counterpart has less detail due to its 5MP camera and a maximum resolution of 2592x1944. However, it can record footage at 30 frames.

Finally, the Montavue camera supports ONVIF protocols while the AvertX camera is limited to RTSP.

These fisheye security cameras use PoE to transmit data and receive power. They can operate on their own as they support Micro SD cards but will work best when coupled to an NVR.

The lenses used in these cameras are fixed focus and do not support any PTZ functionality.

Also, they include Digital WDR technologies to improve the clarity of the captured footage.
