What this tool does
Find how wide an area a camera can see at a given distance, or the viewing angle needed to cover a chosen width. Use it to compare camera positions or check whether a view could include a gate, driveway or doorway.
How to use it
- Choose whether to calculate scene width or viewing angle.
- Enter the distance straight ahead from the camera to the area being viewed.
- Enter the camera’s horizontal viewing angle from its specifications, or the width you want to cover. The field you do not need is disabled.
Reading your result
Scene width is the left-to-right coverage at that distance. Moving farther away makes the view wider, but spreads the image’s detail over more space.
Example: a 90-degree horizontal view covers a width of 20 m at a distance of 10 m.
Keep in mind
Use the horizontal angle, rather than the diagonal angle sometimes advertised. Measure straight ahead to the middle of a flat scene, not diagonally to its edge.
This is a simple view-width estimate, not a floor-coverage plan for a tilted camera. Obstacles, lens distortion and image cropping can change the installed view.
