Choose Arlo Ultra 2 for 4K event footage, HDR and a wider view, provided you are willing to use a SmartHub and budget for any premium cloud features you need. Choose Reolink Argus 3 Pro for on-camera microSD recording and person, vehicle and animal alerts without a cloud subscription.
Both are wire-free spotlight cameras: rechargeable batteries supply power and Wi-Fi carries the video. This comparison uses the current 5MP Argus 3 Pro, rather than the earlier 4MP version sold under the same name. The linked Reolink configuration is one white 5MP camera with a white solar panel. Arlo’s linked offer is a two-camera Ultra 2 kit with a SmartHub, so compare the whole package before buying.
Arlo Ultra 2 vs Reolink Argus 3 Pro Head to Head
Key Differences
Ultra 2 records 4K motion-event video; the current Argus 3 Pro records 5MP motion events. Neither battery camera records continuously just because a solar panel or charger is connected. Ultra 2 can use an eligible regional continuous-cloud-recording service with mains power and a compatible hub. Arlo specifies 1080p for continuous recordings, which is separate from its 4K event clips.
For local recording, Argus 3 Pro stores clips in a camera microSD card. Ultra 2 uses storage in its compatible SmartHub. Choose the recording location and remote-playback setup before deciding which camera fits your home.
Key Features in Common
Overview
Power & Data Feeds
Both cameras need charging unless a suitable power accessory keeps the battery topped up. Reolink offers USB charging and an optional solar panel. Arlo supports an approved charging cable and a separate solar accessory. Solar charging does not make either camera a continuous recorder.
Both support 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections. Ultra 2 communicates through its compatible SmartHub, while the Argus 3 Pro can connect directly to the router. Test the signal where you plan to install the camera; choosing 5GHz is not automatically an improvement through walls.
Camera & Lens
Ultra 2 records 3840 × 2160 event video with HDR. The current Argus 3 Pro records 2880 × 1620 at up to 15fps. Arlo has more pixels available for a digital crop, but neither camera is an optical-zoom camera and neither guarantees readable number plates.
Arlo specifies a 180° diagonal view. Reolink specifies 105° horizontal and 55° vertical. Diagonal and horizontal angles measure different directions, so the numbers should not be compared as if they were the same measurement.
Night Vision
Both cameras have infrared night vision and white spotlights for color footage. With the spotlight off in darkness, expect infrared black-and-white video. Reolink specifies up to 10m of infrared illumination for this Argus 3 Pro. Lighting the subject helps reveal clothing and other color details, but the result also depends on placement and distance.
Audio
Each camera has a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way talk, plus an audible alarm. Arlo’s dual microphones support wind and noise reduction. Two-way talk is useful for responding to a visitor; it is still worth checking Wi-Fi reception at the camera before relying on a conversation across the internet.
Storage & Interoperability
The Argus 3 Pro has a microSD slot in the camera. The current offer advertises cards up to 512GB, but earlier 5MP hardware can be limited to 256GB, so check the hardware label. A card is not included in the selected camera-and-solar bundle. Recordings can be reviewed in Reolink’s app or desktop Client. A compatible Home Hub is an optional extra.
Ultra 2 stores local recordings in its SmartHub, not in a slot on the camera. VMB5000 uses microSD and VMB4540 uses USB storage. Direct Storage Access can show local clips through the Arlo app on the home network; accessing those clips away from home needs additional network setup. Local storage does not automatically provide the same experience as Arlo cloud video history.
Cloud
Cloud storage is optional for both cameras, but the trade-offs differ. Argus 3 Pro retains its local recording and classified alerts without a paid cloud plan. Reolink Cloud availability depends on the camera hardware, region and plan; do not assume a free plan is offered everywhere.
Ultra 2 keeps live viewing and basic motion notifications without a paid plan. Cloud video history and advanced classified alerts require an eligible Arlo subscription after any included service ends. Apple HomeKit support needs a compatible SmartHub; HomeKit compatibility does not establish HomeKit Secure Video recording.
Intelligence
The current 5MP Argus 3 Pro detects people, vehicles and animals without a cloud subscription. Ultra 2’s advanced classified notifications rely on an eligible Arlo plan. These features help filter ordinary motion alerts, but installation and sensitivity settings still matter around traffic, moving foliage or pets.
PTZ
Neither camera has motorized pan or tilt, and neither has optical zoom. Ultra 2’s Auto Zoom & Tracking crops the video digitally; it does not turn the camera to follow someone. Digital zoom enlarges existing pixels, so position the camera close enough to the area you need to identify.
Device
Reolink rates Argus 3 Pro IP65 and specifies an operating range of 14°F to 131°F. Arlo describes Ultra 2 as weather-resistant and specifies -4°F to 113°F, without an exact IP rating on the product specification. Arlo supports colder conditions, while Reolink allows a higher stated maximum temperature. Check the environment where the camera will actually sit, including direct sun.
App
Both have Android and iOS apps. Argus 3 Pro also works with the Reolink Client on Windows and Mac. A standalone Argus does not provide direct browser access or ordinary third-party RTSP/ONVIF access. Those options require a compatible Home Hub or supported recorder and the correct firmware; check the hardware compatibility list first.
For simple standalone viewing, use the Reolink app or Client. For Ultra 2, plan around the Arlo app and its required hub rather than assuming every local recording can be reached remotely without extra setup.
